The investigation of nonequilibrium phenomena in physical systems has been one of the main fields of research during the part two decades. In this paper we review the results of such investigations on a small-size many-body system with a variable number of particles, i.e. on atomic nuclei. Particular attention is paid to the achievements of the Zagreb group in the development and application of the preequilibrium model of nuclear reactions from its very beginning.
